Swamping record

back to listing

Date August 1974
Location Hammersmith
Water Temperature Unknown
Boat(s) involved 8+
Boat Construction Open
Outcome All rescued but cox (poor swimmer) stranded with one section of the boat and rowers with the other - one of the rowers had to swim to him and assist him back to the main group - very hazardous.
Description During a race in heavy water, boat was swamped and broke in two at the section (bulkhead separated from the shell), presumably because of bending forces imposed by the buoyant bow and stern compartments.
